Tiger Buddy Program

Be a Tiger Buddy and make a difference in the life of a child.

FOCUS is excited to be a partner with Park Elementary School and The Front Porch Bible Study group in the “Tiger Buddy” program, a volunteer mentoring program that began in September 2013. Volunteers are needed!

The Tiger Buddy program was developed by and is administered by Principal Janice Owens and Counselor Mary Ellen Taylor of Park Elementary school to pair responsible adult volunteers with “at risk” students. The goal is to help the children build true self-esteem, improve attendance, build character and model how to form positive relationships.

Each volunteer will be assigned a specific student taking into consideration the student’s needs, volunteer availability and mutual interests. You will meet with your buddy at least once a week for about 30-45 minutes at Park Elementary during the school day. During this time the two of you can talk, play games, read, eat lunch or breakfast, walk on the school grounds or work in the Park Community Garden. Occasionally the student may be helped with homework if he/she requests help.

Students are selected for this program by the school’s administrators so that they may benefit from the positive social interaction and good character modeled by the volunteers.

Knowing that a positive educational experience is the best indicator of academic success, we encourage your participation as a Tiger Buddy. The requirements are simple: a love of children, some available time, patience and commitment. The staff at Park Elementary will offer their support and Tiger Buddy training, but most importantly you will have the opportunity to make a real difference in the life of a child.

To apply as a volunteer Tiger Buddy, please visit Park Elementary School and complete an application.

Cubs for Christ
Park Elementary also has a program titled Cubs for Christ. Students in grades 2nd, 3rd and 4th are invited to join. The goal of the group is to provide a safe, fun community for Christian students at Park Elementary to learn about their faith, to pray for their school, and to provide service opportunities to promote the love of Christ to the Park community and beyond.

The group meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month in the school gym from 2:45 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Park Elementary is inviting Christian pastors, youth ministers and others to participate so there will be a different leader each month. A pastor, youth minister, or another member from other churches in Harris County will involve the children in story-telling of scripture, memory verses, small group activities, crafts, and snacks.

Part of each month’s focus will be correlated to Park’s character virtue of the month. For a service project, students will be asked to bring one item (designated per month) for FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians United in Service) for the food pantry.

If you or your church would like to participate, please contact Park Elementary School.
