A Message From Executive Director Bill Searcey

It has been determined that one of the most effective ways to combat the issue of generational poverty is to influence the thinking and the attitude of youth. We have several programs that involve our volunteers and staff that target kids from 1st – 4th grades. Truly this is the age group which could really make a difference if their attitude about successful living could be changed.

This is not to dismiss the need for changed attitudes of older youth. Most think that by the time kids are in high school their attitudes about life are fixed with no hope of change. But that is not true in every single kids life. Some just need a little nudge.

That is what we are trying to accomplish with a program targeting some at risk students in high school. Twice per year we present a program that emphasizes the consequences of dropping out of school. Additionally we emphasize the benefits of, not only staying in school, but also the benefits of taking advantage of other opportunities after graduation.

We realize that all students are not cut out for a four year stint at a university so we emphasize alternative plans for learning. We especially tout the benefits of technical school training. Using salary numbers and personal experiences we try to show how much more a trained individual with a skill can do in the work place than someone who drops out of school.

We are prayerfully hopeful that our efforts will make a difference in one kids life, which will make a difference in an entire generation.

Missions

We think of FOCUS as a local mission and ministry, but sometimes the things we do reach much further than just Harris County, Georgia. Pictured are a group of children in a small village in Venezuela that are engaged in a Vacation Bible School program supported by a Harris County Baptist Church. Many of the shirts and t-shirts worn by the kids are shirts donated by FOCUS. One of our volunteers, Janelle Fourman, made it possible for these shirts to be donated to these kids many miles from Harris County, Ga.

News from the Thrift Shop

From time to time we have talked about the various volunteer opportunities at FOCUS. And there are many. They range from counseling in the office to helping construct handicapped ramps or delivering food to shut ins. Also, there are numerous opportunities in the FOCUS Thrift Shop.

We now have some 50+ volunteers that perform the countless tasks required to operate a successful shop. These volunteers are a cross section of this county that we love. They are young, they are old, they are black, they are white, they are Hispanic, they are women, and they are men…..all working together to serve Christ through their volunteer efforts at FOCUS.

Within this diverse spectrum of loving volunteers is a unique group made up of mothers and daughters. We are so very fortunate to have 4 sets of moms and daughters working with us.
