A Message From Executive Director Bill Searcey

For 24 years FOCUS has benefited from a partnership with the Harris County High School Art Club through an event called the “Empty Bowl”.
Pictured here in the middle is Mrs. Sondra Palmer, art teacher at the high school, and Julie Nordin, FOCUS coordinator for the event, and Bill Searcey, Executive Director of FOCUS.

The event is a meal of your choice of many varieties of soup, bread, a drink, and a dessert. Each ticket purchaser, as a souvenir, may take a bowl home that has been made by an art student.

400 tickets were printed for the event and as the evening progressed all the tickets were used up, resulting in the best attended “Empty Bowl” in history.
Art works done by the art club students were displayed and the diners had an opportunity to place a silent bid to purchase them. There were also six other paintings donated by professional Harris County artists that were used in the silent auction. Bidding was active and many art works were purchased.

People from all walks of life in our county attended and a great time of fellowship was had by all. School officials, county government representatives, several judges, and many other well known figures were in attendance. And when all the costs of the event are paid, FOCUS will receive a donation for the remainder of the proceeds. Some of the funds, no doubt, will be used for programs involving other groups of children and youth.

Thanks to all who attended the “Empty Bowl” and supported the art students and at the same time supported a long time Harris County Christian ministry, FOCUS.
