A Message From Executive Director Bill Searcey

The success of a non profit Christian ministry is determined by many factors including the staff, the volunteers, and a strong Board of Directors. A committed Board is the backbone of any ministry and FOCUS is no exception.

We are blessed with a 15 member Board of Directors, whose job is to chart the path for the ministry. That includes a personal financial contribution and searching out other sources of income to help support our initiatives in the community. They are also instrumental in planning strategically for the future of the ministry.

This year the board is chaired by Charles Sweat and in January welcomed four new members to the FOCUS board.

Anthony Burns is an Engineering Supervisor with Georgia Power Co. A Tarrytown, Ga. Native and a graduate of the University of Georgia, Anthony is married to Paige and they have three sons; Walker (14), Mitchell (12), and Camden (10). He has served on various Boards including United Way of the Coastal Empire and the Liberty County Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of hunter Road Baptist Church in Cataula, lives in Hamilton and is an avid outdoorsman.

Martha Hartley is a native of Chipley (now known as Pine Mountain), Georgia. Martha holds a Masters degree in Library Science and worked for seven years in academic libraries before attending law school She worked for 18 years as an attorney and served 16 years as the Harris County Probate Judge. In her retirement, she is a dedicated volunteer for the FOCUS thrift store and also volunteers at the Harris County Library and the Chipley Historical Center. She is widowed and has one son, Zach, who is a Harris County deputy. She enjoys gardening, needlework, reading and playing with her granddaughter.

Honorable Judge Thomas Lakes is the newly appointed Probate Judge for Harris County. A native of Greenville, Al., he is a magna cum laud graduate of the University of Alabama and earned his law degree from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at Faulkner University. He is a member of the Georgia and Alabama Bar Associations, the Harris County Cattlemen’s Association, Sunnyside Community Club and is on the board of the W.O. Parmer Scholarship Foundation. He is married to the former Jillian Eubanks of Shiloh, Ga. And they are proud parents of a 6 month old daughter. The Lakes live in Midland and attend First Baptist Church in Manchester.

Judy Westbrook is a retired educator having taught 22 years with regular education students, mild and moderate handicapped students, and behavior disordered and learning disabled students. The last thirteen years of her career she was a school counselor and directed an early morning tutoring program in which she saw an increase in student achievement, attendance and a decrease in unwanted behavior. She and her husband, Roy, are members of First Methodist Church in Pine Mountain. Judy has served as a volunteer at FOCUS since 2006 and is an avid gardener.

These new board members with their varied skills and abilities will serve to give us guidance and great leadership as we move forward to promote the name of Christ through works of love and compassion and service for the next three year.
