A Message From Executive Director Bill Searcey

Welcoming a new year is always a time, not only to look ahead, but to look back at the past year and see if your efforts and work have made any difference. Sometimes, by the very nature of our mission at FOCUS, it is pretty easy to become callous and even cynical when assessing our effectiveness.

It lifts one’s spirit to be able to look back and remember some very good things accomplished in the name of Christ. Some of these things are big things, such as the addition of 1100 square feet of space to the FOCUS facility in Hamilton. This has enabled us to more efficiently process the donations we receive for the Thrift Store. And this gives us more funding to help those in need in the community.

Another big “thing” is a program still being finalized that will establish an after school mentoring and tutoring program for some at need students. This will be offered at a local church in Hamilton, and will be staffed with some FOCUS staff and volunteers. It will be Christian based and will only be possible with the partnership of the Harris County School System. This promises to be a big positive in the battle against generational poverty.
There have also been some small victories as we ministered during 2016.The man I wrote about last month, needing a front door, did receive a new door for Christmas, big and heavy and able to lock. That was a small thing, but to this elderly man it was a big thing.

Life is mostly a series of small things, some good, some not so good, but mostly made up of a series of many small occasions and insignificant interactions. It reminds me of the interaction Elijah had with God. When he was protected by a cleft in the rock, God passed by. But God was not in a powerful windstorm, nor an earthquake, not even in a fire, but Elijah met with God in a small, gentle whisper.

Perhaps in these small occurrences in life, we find the most important clues to living a full and meaningful life, and they should not be overlooked. So my hope for this new year is to find hope and joy in the small things.

Happy New Year from FOCUS.

The scholarships will be for accredited four-year or technical colleges in the states of Georgia or Alabama. A combination of need, community service and academic ability will be used in determining scholarship fund winners.

This application can be picked up at Harris County High School or the FOCUS office or downloaded from focusfriends.org.(Programs, Scholarship Program)

The application and all of it’s requirements must be completed and emailed to Mr. Bill Searcey at bsearcey9955@gmail.com or mailed to the FOCUS Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 524, Hamilton, GA 31811 no later than Friday, March 3, 2017.

Report from Home Repairs

During December, our home repair volunteers performed house repairs in Hamilton which included a new stovepipe for their wood burning stove. Thanks to Dick Weaver and our home repair volunteers for taking care of this project.

News from the Thrift Shop

Customer service agent (aka cashier) needed immediately the 2nd and 5th Saturday of each month from 10AM until 1PM (but we can use more volunteers any day, any time!) Please give us a call for more information.

We are working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week. Please give us a call and let us know if you are available to help during that time. Extra hands are needed because this time of year brings in extra donations.

As we start this new calendar year I would like to thank each and every one of you for your contributions and efforts throughout the year.

We had our share of challenges but on the other hand, we managed to achieve many milestones, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you very much for the commitment, loyalty and passionate dedication that you have given FOCUS.

Happy New Year from the Thrift Shop
