In 2011 we served a total of 1064 clients in our office, helping Harris county residents with utility bills, propane, prescriptions, rent, food and a host of other requests. We completed 19 home repairs and distributed 5448 bags of groceries, feeding 1184 families, 2811 individuals and 421 families with children. (These totals include our annual Thanksgiving food distribution.)
2012 was another busy year in the Food Bank. Including those we helped for Thanksgiving, we gave out 5625 bags of food to 1161 families with 2758 individuals. Out of the 1161 families 403 had children. In 2012, materials and supplies were purchased by FOCUS to enable home repairs for 18 home owners. The Harris County Rotary Club, the Harris County Hands for Christ volunteers, the group Carpenters for Christ from Cornerstone Baptist Church, and volunteers from Mountain Hill Baptist Church, assisted in these repairs.
In 2011, the thrift shop donated items to area nursing homes, the Harris County Senior Center, Park Elementary School, West Central Georgia Regional Hospital in Columbus (a state psychiatric facility), The Ralston ( a low income HUD facility), Loving Care (a personal care home), Open Door (a homeless program), The Closet of Blessings (sponsored by New Life Community Baptist Church), and Hope Harbor (a women’s substance abuse center’).
In 2012, the Thrift Shop donated fabric, frames cloth and craft items to the Senior Center, books to the Harris County Library, Park Elementary School and to various nursing homes, suitcases, book bags, cell phones and stuffed animals to an abused women’s shelter, dog food to the Humane Society, clothing to the drama club at Harris County High School and Middle School, and clothing to four families whose homes were destroyed by fire.
